THE MIDDLE
SCHOOL LEAGUE

The Middle School League is a youth violence prevention initiative that uses basketball as a tool to engage middle school students in positive, character-building activities. The program will provide a comprehensive approach to violence prevention by combining physical activity, mentorship, and social-emotional learning (SEL). Through league participation, students will be exposed to lessons on conflict resolution, leadership, and teamwork, which are essential to curbing violence in school and community settings.

Target Population: Middle school students (grades 6-8)

Event Details

  • 10-week co-ed league (grades 6-8), featuring 6 teams and 5v5 play.

  • Guaranteed 8 games.

  • Coaches will be local mentors.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

  • Improve Social-Emotional Skills:
    Equip students with the tools to handle conflict, manage stress, and foster positive relationships.
     

  • Promote Healthy Lifestyles:
    Encourage physical activity, teamwork, and a commitment to health through regular basketball practices and games.
     

  • Mentorship & Leadership Development:
    Develop leadership skills and provide mentoring relationships between students, coaches, and community leaders.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The program will run concurrently with the middle school basketball league, using practice sessions, games, and workshops to incorporate violence prevention strategies. The following components will be integrated into the program:

1. Basketball League:

  • Duration: 10 weeks (Guaranteed 8 games)

  • Format: Weekly games, 1–2 practices per week (if schedule permits)

  • Location: Greater Waterbury YMCA

  • Coaches: Trained in youth development, mentorship, and violence prevention techniques

 

2. Mentorship Program:

  • Structure: Each team will be assigned a mentor (local community leader, police officer, or educator)

  • Role of Mentors:

    • Provide one-on-one guidance to players

    • Attend games and practices

    • Offer additional support through monthly check-ins and group outings

    • Serve as role models for constructive, non-violent behavior

 

3. Family & Community Engagement:

  • Parent Workshops: Conduct quarterly sessions for parents on topics like conflict resolution at home, supporting youth in making positive choices, and managing school-related stress.

  • Community Events: Host community basketball events, bringing together youth, parents, and local leaders to celebrate non-violence and positive achievements.​​

Cost : $75 per participant
